SCHOOL AGE CLASSES

Ballet (Age 5+)/Pointe
Ballet is classical dance defined through grace and precision. We instill proper technique and terminology to ensure positive development. Ballet is often known as the base of all dance, and our dancers develop wonderful strength and knowledge through our expert instructors. Students may enroll in age appropriate classes. Once a student reaches level I, it is required that at least 2 ballet classes be taken a week. This allows for the most beneficial development of technique. Pointe is offered per instructor's approval. Jaimie Bernstein is certified in the ABT National Training Curriculum Primary through Level 5 and will be presenting students for annual exams (Level 2 and up). Please wear for girls: hair secured in a ballet bun, black leotard with skirt (optional), pink tights, pink ballet shoes; for boys: black sweats or shorts with white t shirt, black ballet shoes.

Jazz (Age 5+)
A style of dance  defined by upbeat movements and music. These classes include technique, leaps, jumps, and turns. Once a student reaches level II, it is required that 2 ballet classes a week also be taken to strengthen the student's knowledge of proper technique, body alignment, and flexibility. Ballet is an essential component to learning dance, even if ballet is not the primary focus. Please sign up for age appropriate classes. If you would like to be placed in a leveled class, please contact us for a placement class, if you aren't currently pre-approved. Please wear form fitting dancewear, hair up, and tan jazz shoes or tan turners.

Contemporary (Ages 12+)* Permission required

Contemporary dance is a genre of dance that employs systems and methods found in modern dance and postmodern dance, as well as classical ballet. Contemporary dance draws on modern dance techniques as well as newer philosophies of movement that depart from classical dance techniques by sometimes omitting structured form and movement. To take contemporary levels 4 or 5, 2 ballet classes a week are required. Please wear form fitting dancewear, hair up, and tan turners.

Hip Hop (Age 5+)
A fun and popular class!!! Hip Hop classes teach street movements, including basic break dancing, to current popular music. This style encourages creativity and individuality. This class is for boys and girls, beginners through adult. Everyone can do it! Please sign up for age appropriate classes. Please wear form fitting dancewear, hair up, and black hip hop shoes/combat boots.

Tap (Age 5+)
Tap is a wonderful form of dance that uses sound throughout all of the movements. These classes are fun and energetic combining the sounds and the music to create exciting tap routines. Please sign up for age appropriate classes. Please wear form fitting dancewear, hair up, and Black lace up, split sole tap shoes.

Acro Dance (Age 5+)

Acro combines classical dance technique with acrobatic elements. Dancers will improve flexibility, strength and tumbling skills and learn to incorporate them into jazz, lyrical, and contemporary dance styles. Mats are provided. Because Acro relies on the progression of set skills, at DTNJ, we start students in Beginning, no matter the age. Students will be moved up when certain skills are mastered. If you would like to be placed in a leveled class, please contact us for a placement class, if you aren't currently pre-approved. Please wear form fitting dancewear, hair up, and no shoes.

Teen Classes
We also offer an array of teen classes that allow teens to learn at their pace within their age group for a fun learning experience. We offer Beg/Int and Int/Adv levels for teen. We ask that everyone start at Beg/Int regardless of experience and we will move you up when you are ready!

Adult Classes
Adults are encouraged to dance in our Teen or advanced levels. If there is enough interest, an adults only class can be arranged.
